To give a little context, last year I took the plunge to learn how to write code. I took the brave step of resigning from my job and enrolled on the Northcoders Developer Pathway Course, in retrospect it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. After countless morning and evening trains to Manchester and hours of writing code I graduated from the course!

Northcoders is a 12-week course divided into 3 week blocks: Fundamentals, Back End, Front End and the Project Phase. The Developer Pathway encourages you to consolidate your skills and the support provided by all the tutors and mentors is amazing. It is hard work but at the same time you have great fun learning how to code and you meet people from all walks of life.

It’s quite hard to picture yourself writing code on a real-life project in an organisation during the course but what you realise when you start your first job is that Northcoders has taught you invaluable techniques and skills that you can apply to your work so you can hit the ground running. From the day I finished the course to my first day on the job I had great support from Northcoders and their partners. When I graduated from Northcoders I was put in touch with Melanie Parker from Graft Talent who organised my interviews and supported me throughout each one.

Here is a little timeline of my journey:

I knew the minute I walked in the door for the interview at The Data Shed that this was the place I wanted to work. 5 months later here I am doing something I love, day in day out. Life as a ‘Shedder’ is far better than I ever imagined. Since arriving at The Data Shed, I have learnt so much and I am still learning every day. From the training sessions put on by the Senior Engineers, to the AWS Cloud Practitioner certificate I am completing, it is hard not to build your technical skills and become a better engineer.

Here is a normal day as a shedder:

Recently Northcoders came to visit me and my two other Northcoders colleagues to see how life is at The Data Shed and why other graduates should come work for this fun, friendly and innovative company. It was great to have a catch up and I am looking forward to seeing more Northcoders come through the door at The Data Shed.

Thank you Northcoders for sharing 2 videos with us that show off our wonderful working space and everyone involved in bringing together Northcoders and The Data Shed.
